Awka the Anambra State capital was agog on Saturday as the Young Progressives Party (YPP) made history as the first political party in recent years to conduct its Gubernatorial Primary in the state in line with internal party democratic principles. A major highlight of the event which took place at Witness Garden Hotel and Suites, Ifite Road Awka was the election of the Senator representing Anambra South, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah by YPP delegates to fly the party’s flag at the state’s upcoming Gubernatorial Election.
Announcing the result of the election which followed the Option A4 voting system, the Returning Officer Videyemo Bamaiyi declared Senator Ubah the winner after he received one hundred and eight out of the one hundred and nine delegates votes.
Speaking further on the election, the Returning Officer said that the Anambra South Senator was the only person that showed interest to contest on the party’s platform after months of advertorial on the sale of Nomination and Expression of Interest Form for the 2021 Anambra State Governorship Election. He also used the opportunity to correct the impression wrongly created by a section of the media that Senator Ubah emerged as the party’s candidate for the election on Thursday.
According to him, the Senator was only cleared on Thursday by the National Working Committee of the party to contest the Primary and that his emergence as the party’s candidate took place after the party’s Saturday Primary in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. He later congratulated the Senator on his victory in the Primary and presented him with the party’s Certificate of Return.
In his remarks, the Party’s National Chairman, Bishop Amakiri congratulated Senator Ubah on behalf of the members and officials of the party at National, State, and Local Government levels. He also thanked ndị Anambra for their huge supports for the party and urged them to consolidate those supports by registering with the party at their various wards. He further handed over the party’s flag to him and reassured him of the party’s full support.
Responding, Senator Ubah thanked the party’s delegates for believing in him. According to him, the delegates had the power to reject his dream to fly the party’s flag at the governorship election even though he was the only aspirant but due to their strong love for him and the belief they have in him, they trooped out and unanimously ratified his aspiration.
The Anambra South Senator also thanked his constituents for the uncommon supports they always shower on him. He further appreciated them for their quality feedbacks and reassured ndị Anambra that his emergence as YPP’s flag bearer will serve as a strong foundation for his vision of a New Anambra where various sectors of the economy will be developed and people’s wellbeing improved.
Commenting on behalf of the representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who were also on the ground to observe the election, an INEC official, Mr. Damian Akhame said that the election which produced Senator Ubah as YPP’s flag bearer for the November 6, Anambra State Gubernatorial Election was conducted in line with the Electoral Act and appreciated the party for being law-abiding.
