The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Erishi Ogbonnaya Nwifuru is said to have unleashed agony and pains on both teachers and local government staff over the governor’s alleged refusal to release the workers’ wages and other entitlements due to them
Ebonyi State workers said to be garnishing their teeth, it was gathered are yet to get May and June salaries for the reason best known to the Governor.
Sources within the corridor of power in Salt State revealed that the state’s local government workers and teachers have not been paid from the exit date of the immediate past governor to date, including the #10,000 exit package promised them by the immediate past administration in the state.
Investigation revealed that their counterpart at the state level, banked in #15,000 for each worker (the exit package) before the exit of the Umahi government on May 29th this year.
“These workers and teachers are currently passing through harrowing moments and they’re being compelled to embark on a verification process that may end in August before the said salaries and others will be paid”. One of the affected workers said.
When contacted through his GSM line for comment on the said pitiable development, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nwifuru, Dr. Monday Uzor, dismissed the claims of the workers, noting that no worker is owed salaries in Ebonyi State even as he challenged our correspondent to go and verify.
“No worker is owed salaries in Ebonyi State. You can go and verify”. Dr. Uzor stated.
Contradicting the claims of Governor Nwifuru’s spokesman, Dr. Monady Uzor’s claim, some media practitioners in the state have spoken out for the teacher’s and the local government worker’s salaries, confirmed to have been withheld since.
The media practitioners (names withheld) however appealed that government should visit the venue of the ongoing verification exercise and see the kind of sufferings Ebonyi workers are undergoing in the name of screening.
They suggested to the powers that be that they should take the screening to the Local Government Areas in question like Afikpo LGA as any worker coming to Abakaliki spends not less than #4,000 in addition to the fact that they have not been paid.
