From ECHE NWAOBASI (NNEWI)

The President General of the Bridgehead Market, Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Sunday Obinze has said that the traders in the market are under fear of possibly causing fire outbreak in their market by the members of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers (NUPENG) who parked over 200 tankers loaded with fuel and gas directly opposite their market for the reason best known to the people who parked the trucks.

Appealing to the Anambra State government, federal authorities as well as security agencies to intervene immediately evacuating these tankers, Mr. Obinze said the immediate intervention of the authorities concerned would prevent any possible fire outbreak around the area.

Newsmen who went for the assessment of the development observed that the tankers all laden with fuel were packed by suspected members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers (NUPENG) Southeast region who sources told the newsmen are trying to embark on strike.

Obinze who insisted that the presence of these tankers with fuel and had posed a great danger to the market, told newsmen that there is an urgent need for these tankers to be evacuated and relocated to another place as his market cannot afford to witness any fire outbreak under his watch.

Said he; “I am appealing to the authorities concerned and the state government to urgently intervene and order that these tankers be evacuated, as far as our market is concerned, we are saying that the presence of these trucks is constituting a danger to the well-being of the market.

Efforts made to reach the leadership of NUPENG, Southeast region, aimed at ascertaining the why the trucks were parked as at the time of filing this report failed as none of their members agreed to volunteer information while some of the drivers who were seen at the scene declined comment.
